What 30+ Years of Chronic Pain Taught Me
My Story, Fear, and a Different Way to Understand Chronic Pain
I suffered with chronic pain for more than 30 years. I have now been free of chronic pain for nearly 8 years. This Blueprint shares the understandings that helped me begin seeing pain — and my life — differently.

Why I Created This
If you have lived with chronic pain for a long time, you may know the cycle: treatments, temporary hope, disappointment, more searching, and the fear that this may simply be your life.
I know that cycle because I lived it. I had diagnoses, pain, fear and years of reasons to believe something was permanently wrong with my body. What eventually changed was not one magic treatment. It was the way I began to understand pain, fear, learned patterns and the mind-body connection.
Inside This Blueprint:
- My personal pain story — and the role fear played in my recovery
- A different way to look at chronic pain — curiosity before certainty
- A personalized reflection tool — to help you explore your own pain history
- A next step — if you want to go deeper and put these ideas into practice
You do not need to reject your medical history to become curious about what else may be influencing your experience.
My Story: How Fear Shaped My Pain — and My Recovery
For decades, I believed my chronic pain was explained by physical problems in my body. Degenerative discs, bulging or herniated discs, pinched nerves, sciatica — those explanations became part of the story I carried about myself.
Years later, I came across mind-body approaches to chronic pain. For the first time, I began questioning whether fear, expectation, attention and learned responses might be playing a larger role in my experience than I had realized.
I love walking. But for years, walking meant pain. Eventually I noticed something I had missed: before I even stepped outside, I was already anticipating pain, worrying about it and preparing for it. I wasn’t walking freely. I was walking while waiting for something to go wrong.
As I learned to notice that anticipation and respond with less fear and bracing, my experience gradually began to change. The pain faded over time. That made me curious about how much authority fear had acquired in other parts of my life too.
Looking back, I could see long-standing fears of failure, rejection, embarrassment and not being good enough. After my father died of pancreatic cancer, health and mortality fears became powerful anxiety. I began seeing connections between my emotional life, my beliefs, my nervous system and my physical experience — without needing to claim that one emotion had caused everything.
“The lesson was not ‘pain is imaginary.’ My pain was real. The lesson was that real pain can be influenced by more than I had understood.”
Today, I no longer organize my life around chronic pain. At 62, I regularly walk around 15,000 steps, and some days more than 25,000. My story is not a promise about anyone else’s outcome. It is evidence that a story can change.
A Reflection to Try Right Now
Think of one familiar, previously evaluated pain situation. In a notebook, write down what you usually predict will happen, what you fear it means, and what you automatically do to protect yourself. Do not try to prove anything. Just notice the pattern.
A Personalized Understanding Tool
This Blueprint also includes a ready-to-use AI prompt you can paste into ChatGPT to create your own personalized Chronic Pain Understanding & Hope Plan — a private, reflective exercise designed to help you explore your pain history, beliefs, fears and patterns. Educational and reflective only — not a diagnosis or medical advice.
The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Chronic Pain
Also included with this Blueprint is access to a comprehensive guide that expands on the knowledge behind the mind-body approach to chronic pain.
Ready to Go Deeper?
A Blueprint can introduce a different way of thinking. But understanding something intellectually and learning to apply it in your own life are two different things.
Life Beyond Chronic Pain is the guided program I created for that next step — 5 phases, 11 modules, built from the personal lessons and practices that helped me eliminate chronic pain after more than 30 years. It covers your pain story and beliefs, fear and anticipation, chronic pain patterns, the fear-pain cycle, internal triggers, Somatic Tracking, Graded Exposure, flare-ups, mental alignment, and building an identity larger than pain.
