[SPH] Lebel M1886/93
The Lebel M1886/93 is a French bolt-action rifle that was the first military firearm to use smokeless powder cartridges, marking a major advancement in small arms technology. Chambered in 8×50mmR Lebel, it features a tube magazine under the barrel with an eight-round capacity, plus one in the chamber. The rifle has a 800mm barrel, an overall length of 1,310mm, and weighs approximately 4.4 kg.
Originally introduced in 1886, the Mle 1886 underwent modifications in 1893, strengthening the bolt and receiver to improve durability. It retained a two-piece bolt head and a cranked bolt handle, which allowed for rapid cycling. The rifle was equipped with a long-range ladder sight, though its tube magazine design became outdated compared to newer clip-fed rifles of the early 20th century.
The Lebel was the standard infantry rifle of France during World War I, seeing extensive use in trench warfare. Despite its durability and stopping power, its slow reloading process and bulky design made it less efficient than contemporary rifles like the Mauser 98. By World War II, it had been largely replaced by the MAS-36, though it remained in limited use by rear-line troops and the Free French Forces.
