Empowered Parenting Live
One evening. Two instructors. Real talk about food, feelings and children.
Catch the replay of me and Vivian Viester (Aware Parenting Instructor) having a conversation and Q&A.
Some of the things that we talked about:
Key themes included trusting children's food intuition, managing parental food stories, and understanding tantrums as healthy emotional release rather than dysregulation. Maru closed with a discussion on the "broken cookie" phenomenon and why Aware Parenting avoids the term "dysregulation."
- Self-demand approach from birth is the foundation — children are trusted to follow internal hunger/fullness cues.
- Free access to food at home is key; parents control what enters the house, not how much the child eats.
- Children raised with unrestricted access do not develop urgency around sweets — Vivian shares what she observes in her son (now 15).
- Over time, children become selective about preferred foods, letting disliked sweets expire rather than consuming everything available.
- Parents who grew up with food restriction carry unresolved feelings that surface when watching children eat freely — self-compassion is the first step.
