Beginner Trumpet Trio

MTR 0311 4155

Introduce one flat and 2/4 time signature to your beginner trumpet students’ performance repertoire with Marching Forward beginner trumpet trio.

As of its publishing date, Marching Forward is in the top four of our easiest trumpet ensembles. Of those top four, it is the shortest, having only sixteen two-four measures. The other pieces in the top four easiest trumpet ensembles of our catalogue also have sixteen measures, but they are in four-four time signature.

Another aspect of Marching Forward that distinguishes it from the other three easiest songs in our trumpet ensemble catalogue is that it is in E flat concert (one flat on B flat instruments). The others are all in concert B flat (no sharps, no flats).

Out of necessity, compositions like Marching Forward are educational in nature. We say, “out of necessity” because beginners have no other option. All compositions are “educational in nature” for beginners simply because they are starting with clean slates. Every note they practice and perform establishes a groundwork for future musical efforts.

For this reason, there is a genuine need for music in keys other than B flat concert (our C). Reading music with flats or sharps in the key signature is a mental skill that must be nurtured. And, it must be nurtured incrementally.

In my system of teaching students, we do spend significant time in C before exploring one flat or sharp. This is important because that is the foundation. But then, once the students have a solid grasp of the unaltered pitches, there should be no delay in adding music in one flat or one sharp.

The musical mind is incomplete without a consciousness of tonal centers.

I am stressing this point here, on Marching Forward beginner trumpet trio, because it is the first piece in our beginner trumpet ensemble series to introduce one flat. Everything about the trumpet trio has been simplified in order to give the students the mental convenience of focusing on the key signature.

Skill Level

The skill level for Marching Forward is the first skill level in our seven level system. This is our Trumpet Pioneer level. The highest note in the piece is third space C and the smallest note value is quarter-notes. As mentioned above, the piece is very short, being only sixteen measures of two-four time.

Practice Recommendations

Because Marching Forward beginner trumpet trio is meant to introduce one flat to the beginner trumpet students’ key signature, we recommend that all the students learn all three parts. That way they are exposed to B flats in the staff and B flats beneath the staff.

Also, Marching Forward beginner trumpet trio is intended as a performance piece. I have used the word “introduce” here, but this is a little misleading. The educational introduction of one flat for beginner trumpet students should happen long before they attempt to learn this piece. When I use the word “introduce” on this page, I mean that we are introducing one flat to the students’ performance repertoire. This is a very important distinction.

Since the piece is in two-four time, the students should also be introduced to what that means before they begin practicing Marching Forward. That said, in my experience, that’s not typically very difficult for beginners to learn. We just recommend that the students learn to read two-four time before working on Marching Forward.
