PDF knitting pattern

Arguably the largest fibre event we have here in Australia is the Sheep and Wool Show, held each year in the city of Bendigo. I was so excited to attend for the first time in 2017, and it was as wonderful as I imagined it would be! For the trip interstate, I wanted a relatively quick project, something that was easy but engaging, and would keep me warm during the chilly nights. The Bendigo Shawl was born as a result, and because I fell completely in love with the stitch pattern, I couldn’t help but later make a hat with the same characteristics to go with it! The only skills you’ll need for the yummy fabric texture are knitting and purling, and it looks great in yarn from the Bendigo Woollen Mill, or whatever’s local to you!

This pattern is a great way to use up single 100g skeins of DK weight yarn, or an excellent use of leftovers from the matching Bendigo Shawl pattern! Find the Bendigo Shawl pattern here. Happy knitting!

SIZE
Child/Adult Small: 46.5cm (18 ¼“) circumference, fits head circumference 48–55cm (19–21 ¾”); 20cm (8”) or 25.5cm (10”) long (with extended brim folded)
Adult Large: 54.5cm (21 ½“) circumference, fits head circumference 56–63cm (22–24 ¾”); 20.5cm (8 ¼“) or 26cm (10 ¼”) long (with extended brim folded)

YARN
Bendigo Woollen Mills Savanna (70% Wool, 30% Alpaca; 400m {437yds}/200g), 1 ball Fog (grey) colourway, or Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 8ply (100% Wool; 400m {437yds}/200g), 1 ball Autumn Glow (ochre) colourway, or 100–150g DK weight yarn

Sample used approximately 58g (116m {127yds}) for Adult Large hat, fitted version (grey), 94g (188m {206yds}) for Adult Large hat, slouchy version (ochre), and 18g (36m {39yds}) for each pom pom.

Please note that Bendigo Woollen Mills yarn is available in 200g balls. You will only need approximately ½ – ¾ of a ball if it is your choice for knitting this hat. Also note that the yardage requirements will vary depending on the hat circumference, length, and any differences in gauge.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
4mm (US 6), at least 100cm (40”) length circular needle, double-pointed needles or short 40cm (16”) circular needle, or size to obtain gauge
Stitch marker/progress keeper (optional)
Tapestry needle
Tape measure
Scissors
Small 6.5cm (2 ½“) diameter pom pom maker (optional)

Please note that pom poms may present a choking hazard for children aged 3 years and under. If you make the hat with pom poms, you may need to include a choking hazard warning label to that effect on the finished product.

GAUGE
18 stitches x 32 rounds = 10cm (4”) in seed stitch, knit in the round and relaxed after blocking.

Seed stitch (worked over an even number of stitches):
Rnd 1: * k1, p1 * to end.
Rnd 2: * p1, k1 * to end.

NOTE
You have the option of making either a hat that will sit fitted around the crown of the head or one with a slouchy fit, and either a short or extended (fold-over) brim. If desired, you can work a longer brim than specified, but note that this will affect your final measurements and yardage requirements.
