Before We Were History: Timeline of Human Beings
Before We Were History is a companion layer for the Montessori First Timeline of Human Beings, created to help children meet the Coming of the Human Being with more wonder, depth, and humanity. Rather than treating early humans only as tool-makers or survivors, this material invites children to notice the fuller signs of human becoming: the hand that shaped, the fire that gathered, the group that protected, the shelter that held, the voice that taught, the mark that remembered, and the beauty that reached beyond survival. With full-color visual panels, evidence-based language, and thoughtful inquiry prompts, children are guided to ask not only “What happened long ago?” but “What does this tell us about being human?” This material belongs most naturally with The Spiral Companion, Week 4: The Coming of the Human Being, and can be returned to later whenever the class is exploring invention, language, memory, ceremony, work, culture, or the long human story.
