Cobb Shawl (knitting pattern)

Geraldyn Cobb was a record-setting aviator and one of the “Mercury 13”: women who underwent training to be astronauts in the United States during the late 1950s. Though she often outperformed the men of Mercury Seven, NASA never sent her to space. Jerrie spent the last years of her life flying humanitarian missions in South America.

Construction Notes: Cobb is a single-skein, triangular shawl worked sideways from the right point to the left. Worked in two parallel stitch patterns, an airy, frenetic lace pattern contrasts with graceful swoops: the strong, stable earth meeting the enticing sky!

Pattern is both written and charted, and has been professionally tech edited and test knit.

Yarn:
one-color, single-skein: 375-500 yards (340-447 m) of fingering-weight yarn.

two-color variation: I used 258 yards (m) of Color A for the border and 470 yards of Color B for the body.

I used A Chick That Knitz’ Silky Singles, a 70 merino/ 30 silk single ply. A plied yarn would be great as well, and will make the decrease columns in the lace section pop out a bit more.

Gauge is not critical for this shawl; the important thing is that the ribbing along the border holds itself together. To determine whether your desired gauge works, swatch in 1x1 rib. If the ribbing is elastic and springs together, your gauge is fine. If the ribbing is loosey goosey and limp, your gauge is too loose.

Materials:
• US5 (3.75mm) knitting needles, or size to obtain a fabric you love.
• 1 needle a size or two larger than above for i-cord bind off.
• one stitch marker.
• scrap yarn or dental floss for lifelines (optional).

Finished Size (after blocking):
Single skein: wingspan 53” (134 cm), depth 28” (71 cm).
Two-color variation: wingspan 66” depth 30”
Note that size will vary based on your yardage, gauge, and how many pattern repeats you complete.
