A work refusal toolkit for paras and IEP teams: a one page staff guide, a 20 minute training with slides, and family letters. Paras handle a lot of refusal, and most of them got no training on it. This gets the whole team using the same words and the same moves.

Who it is for: special education teachers, paras, case managers, and behavior teams in middle school, high school, and 18 to 21 transition programs. It also works for para onboarding, staff meetings, PLCs, and sub folders.

Why I made this: Some of the best behavior support I have ever seen came from paras. They know the student, and they see the hard moments first. They also get handed a student who refuses and told to just get the work done, with no plan and no words. I have trained teachers in crisis prevention and deescalation for 15 years. Refusal is communication, and the team's job is to figure out what the student is telling us while keeping their dignity.

What's included (a 16 page PDF plus a 12 slide deck):

• When a Student Refuses: a one page guide for the clipboard

• Who Does What, plus questions paras should ask on day one

• Para FAQ with honest answers, like whether to let a student sleep

• 20 minute training outline with script notes for every slide

• 12 widescreen training slides (PDF)

• 8 practice scenario cards and an answer guide

• Team agreement for one student

• Family first contact letter, a family input page, an update template, and a phone script

• Para daily handoff note

How I use it: I hand the one page guide to every para on day one. In a staff meeting I run the 20 minute training from the slides, then pairs work through two or three scenario cards. For a student who refuses a lot, the team fills out the agreement together and the family letter goes home early, before there is a problem to report.

What you download: one zip with 2 PDFs: the 16 page toolkit (US Letter) and the 12 slide training deck as a widescreen PDF.

Scope: this is everyday calm support for refusal, not emergency or restraint protocol training. It does not cover restraint, seclusion, or crisis holds. Follow the student's IEP or behavior plan and your district's crisis procedures.
