Choice boards and first then cards for teens and young adults who refuse work. Most first then visuals look like they were made for kindergarten, and my high schoolers would refuse them on sight. These are clean, grown up, and built around one idea: the work stays, but the how is up to the student.

Who it is for: resource rooms, life skills, and transition classes, 18 to 21 programs and community job sites, adapted PE, and any student who shuts down when they feel cornered.

Why I made this: I have trained teachers in crisis prevention and deescalation for 15 years. A real choice gives a student some control without dropping the expectation, and that alone heads off a lot of refusal. Older students deserve visuals that respect their age.

What's included (one 14 page PDF):

• How I use choices with teens (real choices, not fake ones)

• First Then board and First Then Next strips

• How Do You Want to Do It? work choice board with 12 options

• Where, When, How Much board

• Job site choice board and 8 job site first then cards

• 8 classroom first then cards and 8 transition choice cards

• 34 two good options lines staff can say out loud

• Blank cards to make your own

How I use it: I print and laminate the boards, keep a ring of first then cards close by, and offer two good options before the no ever comes. On job sites the student carries the job site cards so the supervisor can use them too.

What you download: one printable PDF, 14 pages, US Letter.

Scope: this is everyday calm support for refusal, not emergency or restraint protocol training. It does not cover restraint, seclusion, or crisis holds. Follow the student's IEP or behavior plan and your district's crisis procedures.
