Rhodopis is an ancient Greek tale often considered one of the earliest known precursors to the Cinderella story. Recorded by the historian Strabo in the 1st century BCE, it tells the story of Rhodopis, a beautiful Greek girl who is captured, sold into slavery in Egypt, and forced to live far from her homeland.

Despite her humble status, her life changes dramatically when an eagle swoops down while she is bathing, snatches one of her gilded sandals, and carries it off to Memphis. The eagle drops the sandal directly into the lap of the Egyptian Pharaoh. Struck by the beauty and delicate shape of the slipper, the Pharaoh launches a kingdom-wide search for its owner. Upon finding Rhodopis, he falls in love with her and makes her his Queen.
