Small moments can shape how we see ourselves, the people around us, and the choices we make.

This 6-page high school reflection activity helps students think about the adults who influence them, the lessons they learn from both words and actions, and how seemingly small moments can become part of something much larger.

Designed as a thoughtful pre-reading companion for To Kill a Mockingbird, students begin by reflecting on two adults in their own lives. They consider what those adults say, what they actually do, how they guide or correct, and what lessons they may want to carry forward—or leave behind.

The activity also introduces Atticus Finch’s example-based approach to parenting:

Demonstrate → Observe → Guide → Correct

Students are then encouraged to watch for small moments throughout the novel, including Boo Radley’s quiet interactions with Scout and Jem, and consider how those moments build meaning over time.

Includes:

  • Cover page
  • Example concept web
  • Two blank student reflection webs
  • Atticus and leading-by-example reflection
  • “Moments Build on Moments” reading connection
  • Boo Radley pre-reading observation activity
  • 8 open-ended reflection questions
  • Final reading lens for To Kill a Mockingbird

This activity focuses on reflection, perspective, influence, empathy, and close reading rather than simple comprehension questions.

Recommended for grades 9–12.
