Sea Glass begins with a familiar summer search along the shoreline—looking among the sand and shells for small pieces of glass transformed by years in the ocean.

Every piece began somewhere else.

A bottle. A jar. A window. Something whole and useful that was broken, discarded, and eventually carried into the water.

Freshly broken, its edges were sharp.

But somewhere between the breaking and the finding, something changed.

Not through one wave or one dramatic encounter, but through thousands of small ones. Wave after wave. Tide after tide. Year after year.

Time does what force alone cannot.

Centered on James 1:2–4 and 2 Corinthians 4:16–18, Sea Glass considers the patient, often hidden work God does within us through difficult seasons and ordinary faithfulness. James invites believers to “let patience have her perfect work,” while Paul reminds us that even when outward circumstances remain unchanged, the inward person can be renewed day by day.

Together, participants will consider why we are so tempted to rush healing, clarity, or change; how faithful endurance differs from passivity or resignation; and why slow progress does not necessarily mean that nothing is happening.

The Gathering also asks harder questions. Does hardship automatically produce growth? What does genuine healing preserve? How can we remember honestly without allowing a painful experience to define the whole story? And what might God be forming within us even before our circumstances—or our feelings—noticeably change?

Sea glass remains a fragment.

Its history has not been erased.

In the same way, grace does not require us to pretend that painful things never happened. Instead, this Gathering makes room for what remains unfinished while asking us to notice where the edges may already be softening—not because the past disappeared, but because grace keeps meeting us there.

Gather Around a Table—or Begin Right Where You Are

A Hearthside Gathering can be used with a church group, women's ministry, small group, Sunday school class, book-club-style gathering, a few friends around a kitchen table, or simply on your own.

The Host Guide provides gentle direction without requiring you to become a teacher. The discussion questions are designed to encourage thoughtful conversation rather than search for a single "right" answer.

And if gathering a group isn't practical right now, the Participant Packet can also be worked through individually as a personal study and reflection.
