Ginkaku-ji: The Silver Pavilion of Kyoto

The Ginkaku-ji, located in Kyoto's eastern hills, is the "little brother" of the famed Kinkaku-ji. Built by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the grandson of Kinkaku-ji’s founder, the temple was initially designed to be covered in silver leaf. However, due to delays caused by the Ōnin War and Yoshimasa’s meticulous pursuit of perfection, the silver coating was never applied. During a 2008 renovation, it was decided that leaving the pavilion wooden better represents the concept of Wabi-Sabi, embracing imperfection and impermanence.

Despite its uncoated exterior, Ginkaku-ji stands as a testament to Zen aesthetics, blending elegant architecture with a meticulously designed garden featuring a serene pond, raked sand, and carefully placed stones. The temple reflects Yoshimasa’s love of art, tea ceremonies, and Zen Buddhism.
