Performance notes
General: this is an improvisatory piece. The notation is a general guide only: the performer must
improvise around the material in each bar.
‘Repeats’: the ‘repeat’ bar-lines do not denote exact repetitions of material, but a general prolongation
of instructions within each “repeated” bar.
Note durations: stemless notes denote ‘free’ rhythm. The durations of notes with standard stems
should be followed as notated.
Pitch: it is acceptable to incorporate surrounding pitches (close to those notated) into the
improvisations. Wavy-line note heads provide an approximation of the pitches required; further
information appears in the score. Wavy lines through standard note-heads within a passage denote
haphazard, non-specific (almost chaotic) execution of notated pitches. In these instances, the
“accidental” inclusion of surrounding pitches (close to those notated) is encouraged.
Three staffs: the performer must improvise around everything within a “repeated” bar even when
more than two staffs are present. Notation in multiple staffs does not have to be sounded simultaneously
as the layout of notation suggests, but sounded haphazardly in any order within the “repeated” bar
(and assisted by the damper pedal as required).
Fixed-Media Electronics (F.M.E.): information regarding the fixed-media electronics backing is
included in text boxes in the score. This information involves timings and descriptions of the electronic
sound-world. This is to facilitate improvisation alongside the backing track should the performer choose
to incorporate it into their performance. If the fixed-media electronics backing track is incorporated into
the performance, the performer must respond to it in any way they feel appropriate; it should influence
the performer’s improvisations in some way.
