A Lady's Visit to the Gold Diggings of Australia in 1852-3: Book Club Edition

A Lady’s Visit to the Gold Diggings of Australia in 1852-53 is an easy-read version of a best-selling travel book from another century! Twenty-year old Ellen Clacy and her brother travelled from England to the Australian goldfields at the start of the ‘gold rush’ in 1852, when thousands of people from around the world were arriving at the gold ‘diggings’. When she arrived home (with gold!) she wrote the story of her travels, and it quickly became a best-seller.

The language of the original is complex, and this version is at upper intermediate level’, aimed at adult and young adult learners. It would suit learners at strong B1 or B2 in the CEFR levels, or EAL4 in Australia. It could also be a great ‘easy read’ for high school students studying Australian history.
 
It can be read as a history of another era, or from a critical literacy perspective, looking at what she leaves out…
