The first book in our
First Flute! series, this is the follow up to the
Tiny Toots book for younger students (ages 5-7) and the perfect place to start for students ages 8+.
The First Flute! series has been
created with the younger beginner in mind, with the goal of creating
musical, confident flutists comfortable playing in a
range of keys (not just Bb major!).
The music in the series has been chosen with a focus on
enjoyable melodies and solid
pedagogical value, starting with easy children's songs and moving on to beautiful folk melodies from the Irish, French, Canadian, English, Scottish & Appalachian traditions along with lovely classical melodies.
Lyrics are included with many of the songs, so the students can sing before learning to play them on flute. From Irish polkas to the music that inspired Vaughan Williams, there are so many
delicious tunes and pieces in this book!
Large fonts and
colour-coded notes are designed to make music notation
easier to process for our younger flute students. Notes are introduced one at a time, with mini exercises at the beginning of each section designed to address the technical challenges of the pieces that follow. Introductory
playback and melody recognition segments are included throughout the book, as are
rhythm challenges and guided
composition exercises. Notation is also included to make use of the
Pneumo Pro to facilitate octave switches and harmonics for those teachers who use these tools in your lessons.
Starting with B-A-G, Book 1 is a perfect fit for
students 8-12 with little to no experience in flute playing. Younger students and those needing a lot of repetition with their first notes should start with the
Tiny Toots books.
The range of notes used in the book also fits the piccolo perfectly, so if you have a new piccolo player looking to build skills, this is a great place to start!
