I’ve always loved “The Great Wave’ by Hokusai, and although I didn’t set out to design socks inspired by his work, the combination of the pattern and the colour took my mind straight to it.

The easy to memorise lace pattern creates a wave shape within the sock, also pulling the top edge into gentle undulations.

The pattern is written for a two different widths (9’’ and 10’’ circumference at ball of foot) and is knitted to your desired length.

First published in print as part of my book, ‘The Second Drawer Down’ available from www.trulyhooked.com

Materials:
100g sock yarn (see notes below)
2.5mm mini circular needles for socks, or DPNS, or magic loop cable
stitch marker
darning needle

Suggested yarns:
Sample shown used Truly Hooked Standard sock in Ocean
Any sock yarn is suitable for this pattern. Choose wool fibres for stetch and comfort. I deally your yarn should also include nylon for strenght and durabilty. Avoid slippy fibres and select solid or tonal colours so the colourwork pattern shows up. Take a black and white photograph of your chosen yarns, this will show if the contrast is stromg enough between them.
Your fabric should be firm, with a little give. Socks should fell 'bandage tight' when first put on, and will relax with wear, like your favourite pair of jeans.

Other yarns used for tests/projects include:
Cygnet Truly Wool Rich 4ply
West Yorkshire Spinners signature 4ply
Garnstudio Drops Nord
King Cole Zig Zag 4ply
