SARS DISPUTE TOOLKIT

Guide + Fillable Checklist · For individual taxpayers in South Africa · 2025/26 & 2026/27 edition

Two products designed to be used together.

The Guide explains the SARS dispute process in plain English — from the moment the notice arrives, through Request for Reasons, Notice of Objection and Notice of Appeal, right through to suspension of payment, condonation, ADR and the Tax Board / Tax Court route.

The Checklist is the fillable 14-page PDF where you record your own case — the exact notice, the tax period, the disputed amount, the trigger date, the evidence, the SARS reference and every outcome.

Buy the two together and you get both the understanding of what to do and the tracking tool to do it — at a saving compared to buying them separately.

WHAT'S INSIDE THE GUIDE

  • 36 chapters covering assessment, auto-assessment, verification, audit, penalties, interest, remission, Request for Reasons, Notice of Objection, Notice of Appeal, ADR, Tax Board vs Tax Court, suspension of payment, condonation, evidence mapping, case-file organisation, templates and a plain-English glossary
  • The full deadline sequence: 30 business days for reasons, 80 for objection, 60/45 for the objection decision, 30 for appeal, 21 / 45-day extensions and the absolute 75-business-day cap
  • Templates: Request for Reasons, Notice of Objection grounds, Suspension of Payment request
  • A worked example of a data mismatch and a disallowed travel deduction
  • A one-page Quick Deadline Reference and a 15-source reference list

WHAT'S INSIDE THE CHECKLIST

  • Section A — Initial Assessment and critical deadlines
  • Section B — Request for Reasons with terminology note
  • Section C — Notice of Objection, grounds, form and outcome tracking
  • Section D — Suspension of Payment (s 164) with the five statutory factors
  • Section E — Evidence maps and an expanded 8-row evidence register
  • Sections F–I — Appeal, condonation, final checks and follow-up tracker
  • Critical deadlines reference page
  • Signature, date and capacity block

WHAT ELSE IS INCLUDED

  • START_HERE instructions PDF — how to open, save, test and complete the Checklist so your entries persist
  • All 15 primary sources listed in the Guide (SARS guides, the Tax Administration Act, the 2023 Dispute Resolution Rules, the 2026 Amendment Act, the Tax Ombud)

HOW THE TWO WORK TOGETHER

  1. Read the relevant Guide chapter to understand the step.
  2. Open the corresponding Checklist section and record your case specifics.
  3. Diarise the deadline in the Checklist and in your own calendar.
  4. Keep the Guide open while you draft your reasons, grounds or suspension request.

WHO THIS IS FOR

  • Individual taxpayers who received a SARS assessment, auto-assessment, verification letter, audit letter or penalty notice
  • Anyone who missed the filing deadline and needs to work out what comes next
  • Anyone preparing a formal objection, appeal or suspension request for the first time
  • Anyone who paid a third party and now wants to understand and track the process themselves
  • Anyone who wants a complete, structured approach rather than scattered SARS letters

WHAT IT IS NOT

This is general information. It is not tax, legal or accounting advice, not SARS-approved, and not affiliated with SARS. It does not submit anything to SARS. Every deadline depends on the notice you received, the tax type, the applicable rule and the current SARS procedure. Verify your own trigger date or consult a registered tax practitioner for case-specific decisions.

FAQ

What's the difference between buying separately and buying the bundle?

R449 vs R498 — the bundle saves R49. You get the same files.

Is the launch price R399 permanent?

No. The launch price is time-limited. After the launch window closes, the bundle reverts to R449. The expiry date is set by Virtus and confirmed on the listing.

How do I open the fillable Checklist?

Open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader or another PDF reader that supports form fields. Save a local copy, enter a test value, save and reopen to confirm the entries persist before you start completing it in full.

Can I print the Checklist?

Yes. Every section is designed to work as a printed page. Print it and complete it by hand if you prefer.

Does the Guide explain the SARS forms themselves?

It explains which form to use, the process and the sequence. It does not reproduce the SARS forms. Those are on SARS eFiling.

Do I get updates if SARS changes something?

The 2025/26 & 2026/27 edition is current as of the release date. Contact Virtus directly for the latest edition.

Can my accountant use this?

The licence is single-user. Contact Virtus for practitioner pricing if you want to use it with clients.
