Why I Write About Bali

My stories are fictional, but the Balinese customs, beliefs and experiences woven throughout them are inspired by real life, family, community and lived experience.

As I learned about Balinese culture, I found myself constantly wanting to know more. What was happening? Why was it being done? When did each ceremony take place? How did it all fit together? Like many people who fall in love with Bali, I quickly discovered that finding those answers wasn't always easy. There was often a language barrier, and much of the information I found through books or online was either very academic or didn't answer the questions I was actually asking.

So I did what came naturally. I listened. I watched. I asked questions. I participated. I made offerings, attended ceremonies and learned alongside my Balinese family and community. I wanted to understand not only what was happening, but why it mattered to the people taking part.

That experience shaped the way I write. I don't want my readers to feel like they are studying Balinese culture. I want them to experience it. Through my characters, you see ceremonies unfold, traditions become part of everyday life and beliefs explained naturally through conversations and relationships. It is the way I wanted to learn. Simple, relatable and woven into a story that transports you back to the island we all love.
