Lydia Jansen van Vuuren
My name is Lydia van Vuuren, a Waldorf teacher with twelve years of experience in South African Waldorf schools. This journey enriched my life and deepened my appreciation for Waldorf's creative approach to education. I was particularly captivated by its unique method of teaching math and numbers.
As a child, I struggled with traditional math education. However, my research into Waldorf's approach revealed a system that explained the "why" behind mathematical concepts. This ignited a passion within me and healed old math anxieties. I witnessed firsthand how children responded positively to this method, developing a genuine love for numbers.
Inspired by the beautiful verses and stories in Stan Maher and Yvonne Bleach's "Putting the Heart Back Into Teaching," I composed simple, pentatonic melodies to accompany them. These songs resonated with young children, who easily learned and enjoyed them. To share this joy, I produced a CD, "The Quality of Numbers – Stories and Songs."
I'm proud to have brought this project to life, making these songs and stories accessible to everyone. I hope they inspire children to see math as a beautiful language, rather than a source of fear.
