Now and then, I get this visceral urge to delete all of my digital platforms and content. I’m experiencing that moment right now as I type this. I want to use this blog post to process why I've wrestled with this and why the platforms themselves keep affirming that this (or something like this) is an inevitable next step.
I’ve been doing wellness and consciousness content for over five years. I've been sharing my music artist journey since the rise of the platforms themselves. It’s been intellectually and emotionally gratifying. Financially, (for me) it’s been deeply unsatisfying. The deeper I go within this creator journey, the clearer it becomes that the financial components are strongly connected to a very extractive collective psychological and emotional pattern. Most people don’t even realize they’re feeding it.
The algorithms shift every quarter, in case you didn’t know. Platforms introduce sophisticated ways to keep that extractive pattern active. If a creator experiences an influx in engagement and revenue in one quarter, it definitely takes a hit in an upcoming quarter. Some creators get hit more than others. But everyone takes a hit, including those who only consume content. In other words, your favorite creator suddenly stops showing up in your feed, and you have to jump through hoops to find them again. Or you’re so bound by the scrolling loop that you don’t even think to manually check if they’re posting anything.
I don’t want this to sound like judgment or me forcing you to expend energy to prove my point. I’m bringing awareness to how easily certain conveniences can lure us into robotic groupthink. Much of the high-performing content looks and sounds the same. They’re all using the same bait-and-hook lines to capture your attention, then lead you into a chaotic pyramid scheme or a “community,” which is nothing more than a codependent echo chamber.
If what’s being offered claims to have resources, it’s usually a packet that leads to another packet, to a resource that’s behind a paywall you can’t afford. And if you can’t afford it, your emotions and intellect get played with enough for you to go into debt to get it. Which is often into a deeper deficit than you may’ve already been in. And once you’re behind the wall, you’re unfulfilled, broke, and stuck.
With AI assistants on these platforms now, emerging and established creators start to look and sound the same. Meta has just informed us that they’re infiltrating all the main social platforms. It wasn't even an ask. It was a deliberate announcement. Which means variety, diversity, and niche content are going to be even less visible than they are now.
My content is very niche. So it will be heavily affected. I’ve spent significant time and energy cultivating a space that honors the integrity of my content and transmissions. My socials are used as organic funnels into my ecosystem (my books, my coaching program, my music, my creative projects). I don’t use ads; I don’t have a marketing manager; I don’t have brand deals; I’m not getting commissioned. What I have has been built from scratch and on really strong convictions. And still, it hasn’t been enough support to expand my territory or even my livelihood in visibly tangible ways.
My reach on social platforms constantly fluctuates. I don’t take any of it personally because much of it is structurally out of my hands. When my socials get a window of visibility and engagement, it bleeds into my ecosystem. I get passive income. But it’s been very inconsistent. To preserve my time, energy, and attention, I don’t post as often as I used to.
I’m not going to delete and archive my social platforms…yet.
However, I’m going to focus more on those who are supporting my ecosystem. If I have something important to offer the collective, I’ll send it through email or through a blog post. Some of you are sowing into this space in ways I’m eternally grateful for. Each time a notification of someone buying or donating hits my bank account (because whatever you buy here goes directly to me), it pays a very important bill or supports something that helps me remain functional enough to keep doing this work. It can often feel like a thankless job until more people see the value and it all lands in visibly tangible ways.
In the meantime and in between time, please be kind and gentle with yourself, as I do the same.
