Learning through stories

We are made for stories. To tell stories and to learn from hearing them.

A core belief of mine is that stories are how children (and adults) learn best. Let me ask you a question: what will you remember more, an obscure date in a history textbook sandwiched between ten other facts to memorize, or a story about a brave soldier who fought for their country and for freedom? I would say the story would be more memorable. Honestly, this is how I have learned most things in my life. Stories make learning come to life in my mind. I believe humans are wired for stories.

It’s not just me. Jesus himself used stories to tell important truths about God, heaven, and spiritual things. He taught through parables, which are short, simple stories that reveal truth and teach morals. Jesus told stories to explain the kingdom of heaven and His kingdom. These stories were written down, and now we read them in our Bibles. We are still learning from Jesus’s stories two thousand years after they were told.

“All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable.” –Matthew 13:34

If Jesus used stories as His primary way of teaching, then why don’t we use stories to learn? I think stories are the hidden key to unlocking a child’s imagination and ability to learn.

Thus, Lamppost Press was born. A homeschool curriculum that focuses on stories to grow your child’s mind and make English and Language Arts fun! This is at its core a novel study, but with a twist.

Now I could tell you exactly what to read—there are so many beautiful books I would love for you and your family to read—but I know every family and every child is different. I want you and your children to love reading. I don’t want it to feel like a chore, but something that sparks their creativity and deepens their imagination and ability to take in information.

I wanted to have a range of books for kindergarten through high school for big families like mine. I know it was hard for my mom to find a curriculum for all of my siblings. With so many of us at different ages and grades, it’s not just finding one good curriculum but many. That is why I wanted to create this family-friendly novel study for all ages for simply lovely learning and that celebrates the fall season.

There is a section for picture books, read aloud stories, independant readers, and classics for high school. As the oldest of six, big families are important to me and I wanted to create something for all of you!

Yes! I made this guide to be customizable for you! You get to choose what books you want to read and if you want to read a book a month or take your time to read one book this autumn season. I want you and your children to love learning and reading so there are a lot of options in the hope you all find something you love and that builds lasting memories!
