About Me

I’m Mike Thompson, a Northern California photographer with a lifelong passion for exploring places, observing light, and creating photographs that tell a story.

Over the years, I’ve come to believe that the best photographs rarely come from simply arriving at a beautiful location and pointing a camera at it. They come from slowing down, looking carefully, understanding the place, and deciding what you want your photograph to say.

That philosophy inspired my Photographic Journeys series.

Each guide is built around a one-day photographic adventure. I select locations that work together visually and geographically, then provide the practical information, photographic suggestions, vantage points, and creative ideas that can help you make the most of your time there.

But I don't want to tell you exactly what to photograph. My goal is to get you to the right place, help you understand its possibilities, and then encourage you to discover your own photograph.

My work ranges from landscapes and travel photography to portraits, events, and visual storytelling, but the common thread has always been the same: photographs should be about more than what something looked like. They should say something about what it felt like to be there.

I hope these guides encourage you to explore someplace new, slow down when you get there, and come home with more than a memory card full of pictures.

Go somewhere. Look closer. Make photographs that matter.
