Steven Istvan Rinyai

He was born on October 14, 1945, in Hungary along the Croatian border. His father was born in Budapest, while his mother was in Croatia. Steven was born in a small village because his mother and two sisters fled from the heavily bombed Budapest in 1944 while his father was fighting on the front in Ukraine. He lost his father in a suspicious accident in the hardline-line communist era in 1954 when he was only eight years old. As a child, he survived the 1956 War of Independence. Later he realized he had to flee from communism. He met his wife at age twenty. Relatives of his wife lived in the United States, where his mother-in-law once visited. Encouraged by her stories, they decided to head to the New World. They fled the border and lived in Italian refugee camps until they managed to immigrate to the United States. There they migrated to three states. After an absence of five years, they returned to their homeland due to his wife’s illness. There, they were punished despite an amnesty. They were not released from Hungary for 6 years. In the meantime, their son was born. As soon as they received their passports, they fled to Switzerland. Since they didn't get a permanent settlement in Switzerland, they immigrated to Canada. After retiring in 2013, he began writing short stories which later became a novel. Then he started translating it into his native language.
