Since 2024 we have done about 20 unit studies as part of our homeschool (the favourites so far being Vincent Van Gogh, Monet and “How to make an apple pie and see the world” (based on Marjorie Priceman’s lovely book).

Of all the tools I have learnt about and tried at home with my 3 young children, unit studies are right up there for effectiveness and efficiency. You choose a topic, gather a whole bunch of books and resources on said topic, do related activities and cover a range of learning areas along the way.

You can keep it brief and simple, read one book, watch one video, print off a few worksheets and call it a day, or you can extend the journey and make it an adventure. (For “How to make an apple pie and see the world” we added in writing, looking up places on a world map, research, shopping, baking an actual apple pie together and had a blast).

I believe you can do unit studies with children even as a working parent, and enjoy watching the little consistent efforts you make compound in all these ways you never imagined - well, that is the way it is in our household … children’s minds and ability to learn are amazing, and time spent together is never in vain!
