Introduction

Starting in the summer term of 2015, Theo Lawrence began teaching the MYM Snare Drumline Group in Montgomeryshire (Wales, UK). The rebranded youth music group expanded to include this new group, and also the MYM Guitar & Ukulele Group, also tutored by Theo.

After 2 terms of teaching a group of pupils aged between 8 and 12, some complete beginners and some more advanced, Theo is releasing the first of many Snare Drum Sheet Music books.

The MYM Snare Drumline Group is Theo’s adaption of ‘Drumline’ groups, tribal drumming, military drumming, Drum Corps, and epic styles of film score music.

There are many areas left to explore for the drum group. In this first book, Theo has focussed on building a foundation of simple and short snare drum pieces to help give the group confidence and develop a strong sense of rhythm, timing and pulse. There is also a very small amount of dynamic use, repeats, and drum rudiments.

Level 1 Book
The Level 1 book is designed for complete beginners, or ‘basic beginners’ level. This level could also be played by players of other instruments that are new to drums.

Level 2 Book
Level 2 is designed for grade 1-2 level. The rhythms are more complex, but there are no buzz rolls or drags.

Level 3 Book
Created for grade 2-3 level drummers. It encorporates buzz rolls, drags, flams, and harder rhythms.

The right amount of easy and challenging for many students and different possibilities on how to use it.

It took me quite some time to find a book like this one. I needed kind of basic rhythm exercises that gradually get harder for a student with rhythmical difficulties.
Then I found the 10 Snare Drum Pieces.
What I like and how I use it:
- many repetitions, just slightly different
- getting gradually harder but not too soon
- tackles "problems" bar by bar so it will be fine to tell a student "practice just one bar at a time"
- helps to consolidate a sense of rhythm as well as teaching certain rhythmical patterns

How I use it:
I use one piece per lesson, let my student sight read each bar and practice each bar seperately and then line by line (2 bars)
Then in the next class we will put all of them together.
Have had great results with this method in overall sense of rhythm as well as in cleaning up the patterns and this book serves the purpose really well.
My students love this book and I can only recommend it for beginners as well as for intermediate students struggelung with pulse or rhythmics.
