S.M.A.R.T. Series #1: The Complete Guide to Effective Meeting Actions (Series Introduction)

Meetings don’t fail because of poor discussion—they fail because of poor follow-through.

How often have you left a meeting with actions like “progress the project” or “look into options”? By the next meeting, the update is vague: “I’m working on it.” That’s not progress—that’s ambiguity.

This blog series is about fixing that problem.

To make meeting actions effective, they must follow two core principles:

1. Chunking: Break Work Into Achievable Actions

Large, vague actions slow teams down. Instead, break them into smaller, manageable steps that can be completed quickly. This creates:

  • Clear progress week-to-week
  • Higher accountability
  • A sense of momentum

2. S.M.A.R.T Actions

Every meeting action should pass five tests. It must be:

  • Specific – Clear and unambiguous
  • Measurable – You know when it’s done
  • Achievable – Realistic for the person assigned
  • The Responsibility of – Owned by one person
  • Time-bound – Has a clear deadline

Chunked S.M.A.R.T actions are:

  • Easier to execute
  • Easier to track
  • Easier to complete

This creates momentum and delivers progress!
