Care Guide
Important Note — Please Read Before Using Your Crystal Sound Bowl
Our crystal sound bowls are crafted from high-purity quartz (HPQ) and are delicate, high-vibrational instruments that require careful handling. Although quartz is a strong natural material, crystal sound bowls have thin walls and are extremely fragile. They can chip, crack, break or, in some circumstances, suddenly fracture or snap.
The following can cause damage:
- Over-vibrating the bowl
- Playing the bowl too hard or too quickly
- Incorrect playing techniques
- Incorrect use of mallets or hard objects
- Allowing the hard part of a mallet to contact the bowl
- Incorrect stacking or packing
- Stacking bowls without protective pouches
- Mishandling, dropping or knocking the bowl
- Sudden temperature changes
- Placing hard objects inside the bowl
Cracks can develop gradually or a bowl can break suddenly. Proper care and gentle handling are essential to maintaining the beauty, integrity and resonance of your bowl.
Playing Your Bowl Correctly
Crystal sound bowls should always be played with gentle, controlled movements.
- Begin by playing your bowl slowly and softly, gradually increasing the intensity only when necessary.
- When circling the bowl, use a slow and controlled movement rather than rapidly moving around the rim.
- Avoid over-singing or over-striking the bowl.
- Never force the sound or attempt to make the bowl excessively loud.
- Playing too hard or too quickly can cause the bowl to over-vibrate, increasing the risk of damage.
- Always use the appropriate mallet for your bowl.
- Only the soft playing surface of the mallet should make contact with the bowl. The wooden handle or any hard section of the mallet should never strike the rim or body of the bowl.
- Always play the bowl from the outside. Do not play the inside of the bowl.
- Never use hard objects, metal objects or inappropriate tools to create sound.
A gentle approach is best.
Allow the bowl to produce its natural resonance rather than forcing the vibration. Your bowl does not need to be played loudly to create a beautiful, powerful tone.
Stacking & Packing Your Bowls Safely
Crystal bowls require particular care when being transported or stored.
- Always place each bowl into its individual protective nesting pouch before stacking.
- Never stack bowls directly against one another without protective pouches.
- When packing your bowls, place the pouch around the bowl before placing it into the bag. Do not place an empty pouch into the bag first and then lower the bowl into it, as this can accidentally knock or chip another bowl.
- Never place mallets or hard objects inside the bowls.
- Store mallets and other accessories in the designated side pockets of your carry bag.
- Take care when removing bowls from a stacked set so that the edges do not knock against one another.
- Make sure you know the correct order and sizes of your bowl set before stacking.
Example: A stackable set of 3 may include 11", 9" and 7" bowls, while a set of 4 may include 12", 10", 8" and 6" bowls.
Storing Your Bowls Safely
When your bowls aren't being played, store them somewhere safe and stable.
- Keep bowls in their protective pouches and well-padded carry bags when transporting or storing them.
- If displaying your bowl, place it on a stable, secure surface and always use the provided O-ring underneath the bowl.
- Keep bowls away from the edges of shelves, tables and other surfaces where they could be knocked over.
- Keep them somewhere they cannot be accidentally knocked by children, pets or other objects.
- Avoid placing bowls where they may experience sudden temperature changes.
- Never place mallets or hard objects inside a bowl.
Handling Your Crystal Bowl
Because the surface of a crystal bowl can easily collect fingerprints and oils from the hands:
- Wash and dry your hands before handling or playing your bowl.
- Always lift and carry your bowl using two hands, supporting it from underneath.
- Avoid carrying a bowl by its rim.
- When travelling with your bowl, always use a properly padded carry bag or protective pouch.
- Never drag or slide your bowl across a hard surface.
- Handle your bowl slowly and intentionally, particularly when placing it down or removing it from a bag.
Cleaning Your Frosted Crystal Bowl
Our frosted crystal bowls have a delicate textured surface, so avoid rough or abrasive cloths that may catch on the frosting or leave fibers behind.
For gentle physical cleaning:
- Rinse the bowl with lukewarm water.
- If necessary, use a small amount of mild, fragrance-free dish soap diluted in water.
- Gently clean the surface using clean fingertips or a very soft, non-abrasive sponge.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove any remaining soap.
- Allow the bowl to air dry naturally on a clean, stable surface.
For fingerprints or light marks, a gentle rinse is preferable to vigorous rubbing or scrubbing.
Please avoid:
- Hot or boiling water
- Sudden temperature changes
- Abrasive cloths, brushes or sponges
- Harsh chemicals
- Bleach
- Strong or fragranced cleaning products
- Salt or saltwater
- Essential oils directly on the bowl
- Dishwasher cleaning
- Aggressive scrubbing
Do not leave water sitting inside your bowl for extended periods. Regularly leaving water in the bowl may affect accessories, decals or stickers and can make handling more difficult.
Energetic & Spiritual Cleansing
For those who work with crystal sound bowls as part of meditation, sound healing or spiritual practice, you may also wish to incorporate an energetic cleansing ritual. There is no single correct way to spiritually cleanse a bowl. Choose the practice that feels meaningful to you.
Moonlight
Place your bowl somewhere safe where it can receive indirect moonlight overnight. Many people use this as a ritual for renewal and resetting their intention.
Sound Cleansing
Gently play the bowl and allow its vibration to move through the surrounding space. You can use the bowl's own sound as part of a ritual of clearing and renewal.
Smoke Cleansing
If you use incense or another smoke-cleansing practice, gently move the smoke around the bowl rather than directly against it. Always keep flames, embers and heat safely away from the quartz.
Intention
Place your hands near the bowl, take several slow breaths and set an intention for your practice. You might say:
"I release what no longer serves this space. May this bowl be clear, balanced and ready to carry its sound with intention, peace and presence."
Sacred Space
You may also place your bowl in a clean, peaceful environment alongside objects that hold personal or spiritual meaning to you. Energetic cleansing is a spiritual practice rather than a scientifically established method of removing physical contaminants. For physical cleanliness, always follow the cleaning instructions above.
Treat Your Bowl With Care
Your crystal sound bowl is a delicate instrument designed to be enjoyed, used and appreciated. The more gently you handle and play your bowl, the better you can protect its physical integrity and preserve its beautiful resonance. If you are new to crystal sound bowls, we recommend learning appropriate playing, handling and care techniques before using your bowl extensively. When in doubt, choose gentleness.
Please note: Crystal sound bowls are fragile by nature. Damage caused by impact, incorrect playing techniques, improper handling, stacking, storage or cleaning may not be covered by warranty or returns policies.
