Sound Bowl Guide

Crystal Singing Bowls

Crystal singing bowls are musical and meditation instruments known for their clear, resonant tones and sustained vibrations.

Our bowls are crafted from high-purity quartz (HPQ) and are designed to create beautiful, resonant sounds for meditation, sound practices, personal rituals and mindful spaces. Crystal singing bowls can be incorporated into many different practices, including:

  • Meditation
  • Sound baths
  • Breathwork
  • Yoga
  • Relaxation
  • Personal rituals
  • Energy practices
  • Sacred spaces
  • Mindful listening

There is no one right way to experience a sound bowl. Your practice can be completely personal to you.

Choosing Your Bowl

Crystal singing bowls come in a variety of sizes, notes, frequencies, colours and designs.

Size

The size of a bowl influences its pitch, resonance and overall character. Generally, larger bowls produce deeper tones, while smaller bowls tend to produce higher tones.

Notes

Different bowls produce different musical notes. You may choose a bowl based on the tone you naturally feel drawn to or according to the musical or chakra system you wish to work with.

Frequencies

A frequency describes how many times a vibration repeats each second and is measured in Hertz (Hz). In sound, frequency determines the pitch we hear — lower frequencies create deeper tones, while higher frequencies create higher tones. Each crystal singing bowl produces its own musical note and resonating frequency. Some bowls are tuned using a 432 Hz tuning reference, meaning the notes are tuned in relation to A = 432 Hz — not that every bowl produces 432 Hz. Read below to explore the unique notes, frequencies and traditional chakra associations of each bowl.

Colours & Designs

Crystal bowls can be found in many different colours, finishes and designs. You may choose a bowl based on its appearance, symbolism or simply the way it feels to you. There is no single "correct" bowl. The bowl that is right for you is the one whose sound, size and character feel aligned with your personal practice.

The Seven Chakras Frequency

In traditional sound-healing and chakra practices, the seven musical notes are commonly associated with the seven-chakra systems. Each chakra is traditionally paired with a musical note, creating a seven-bowl sequence from C through B. These associations are part of spiritual and sound-healing traditions and are not a scientifically established system. Our bowls are tuned to a 432 Hz reference, with each bowl producing its own unique musical note, frequency and resonance.

How to Play Your Crystal Singing Bowls

Your bowl doesn't require a complicated ritual. Find a quiet, comfortable space and allow yourself a few uninterrupted moments.

1. Place Your Bowl Safely

Place your bowl on a stable, level surface with the appropriate rubber O-ring or cushion underneath.

Make sure the bowl cannot easily move, slide or fall.

2. Set Your Intention

Take a few slow breaths.

You may choose to set an intention for your practice — relaxation, meditation, grounding, gratitude, connection or simply creating a moment of stillness.

3. Begin Softly

Hold your mallet comfortably and begin with a gentle strike or slowly move the mallet around the outside rim. Allow the sound to build gradually. You do not need to play the bowl loudly to create beautiful resonance. Sometimes all you need to do is start with one bowl and go from there.

4. Allow the Sound to Develop

Use slow, controlled movements and gentle pressure. Avoid rapidly circling the bowl or applying excessive force.

Allow the vibration to build naturally rather than forcing the sound.

5. Listen

Once the bowl begins to resonate, pause and simply listen for 10 - 15 seconds. Allow the sound to naturally fade before playing again. Notice the tone, vibration and how the sound moves through the space.

6. Explore

As you become more familiar with your bowl, you can gently experiment with:

  • Different playing speeds
  • Different amounts of pressure
  • Different mallets
  • Different bowls
  • Playing bowls individually
  • Combining multiple bowls
  • Allowing tones to overlap and naturally fade

There is no need to rush. Your relationship with the sound develops through practice and connection.

Playing Your Bowl Safety

Crystal singing bowls are delicate instruments and should always be played gently. Our bowls are made from high-purity quartz and can chip, crack or break if handled or played incorrectly.

Please Remember:

  • Begin slowly and softly.
  • Do not over-strike the bowl.
  • Do not over-vibrate the bowl.
  • Avoid playing excessively fast or forcefully.
  • Only the soft playing section of the mallet should contact the bowl.
  • Never allow the wooden handle or another hard object to strike the bowl.
  • Always play from the outside of the bowl.
  • Never place hard objects inside the bowl.
  • Always place your bowl on a suitable O-ring or cushion when playing.
  • Handle your bowl carefully when moving or transporting it.

A gentle approach is always best. If you are new to crystal singing bowls, take your time learning how your particular bowl responds to different playing techniques. Play gently.

Listen.

Allow the sound to create space for whatever you need in that moment.
