In our new Nourished Grades 2–3 curriculum, students travel to countries around the world as they learn about nutrition, geography, and culture through hands-on cooking. During their stop in Italy, they'll make homemade personal pizzas from scratch while discovering how carbohydrates provide energy for our bodies and how protein and healthy fats work together to help us grow and stay healthy. They'll also learn about traditional Italian pizza and the simple, fresh ingredients that have made it a favorite for generations.
The recipe is shared below. We hope your family enjoys making it together!

Directions
- Pour the warm water into a large mixing bowl. Add the honey and stir until it dissolves.
- Sprinkle the yeast over the water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes bubbly.
- Stir in the olive oil.
- Add the white flour, whole wheat flour, and sea salt. Mix until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. If it's sticky, add a little more flour.
- Knead the dough for 3–4 minutes until it is soft and stretchy.
- Return the dough to the bowl and let it rise for 20 minutes while you preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and prepare your toppings.
- To make the sauce, blend the stewed tomatoes, garlic, and basil until smooth.
- Divide the dough into two equal pieces. Roll or gently stretch each into a small circle about 8 inches across.
- Place each pizza on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Spread the sauce over each crust, then add your favorite toppings.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Buon appetito!
