About Me
I specialise in effective knowledge transfer projects and endeavours in the work place and in education. I am in the business of increasing human ability.
Through my work as an Incorporated Engineer, a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a STEM communicator (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths), my interest lies in conquering human error and developing competence in individuals and groups regardless of gender and societal, racial or religious background. True literacy is key to competence, and this is my focus.
Why do I love Jeff Smith's Science Series? Because they align with my view on science and literacy being inseparable for success.
Jeff Smith’s Science Series textbooks and accompanying workbooks are a one of a kind, unmatched product, in terms of developing real comprehension in learners wishing to study and grasp the basics of physics, biology and chemistry for life-long success and as a foundation to more advanced studies.
Although they align with the Cambridge Science Curriculum in terms of topics per school year, the textbooks boast comprehensive glossaries, extensive photos and hand-drawn illustrations, and make extensive use of definitions, that is defining all key science words as the student progresses through the textbook including the Greek or Latin root of the word (and in some cases, Arabic root). In this way, students not only develop their science knowledge and comprehension, but develop their literacy skills and English vocabulary for real world application.
In order to get the most out of each textbook, a full programme of study can be found in each accompanying workbook. The workbooks can be printed for the student to sign off each step. Each programme includes exercises, learning drills, experiments, and a host of practical steps to get the students thinking and applying the information. The objective is full comprehension and application – NOT memorising to pass an exam. A textbook combined with its accompanying workbook constitutes a full course in that topic for that year.
These textbooks are idea for homeschoolers or anyone wanting to refresh their science. They are also excellent tools for teachers, or simply students who want to learn for real, even if they are attending mainstream school.
The Science Series is presented as follows:
· UK Year 7 (11-12 years old) Physics, Chemistry and Biology – Three textbooks with accompanying workbooks.
· UK Year 8 (12-13 years old) Physics, Chemistry and Biology – Three textbooks with accompanying workbooks.
· UK Year 7 (13-14 years old) Physics, Chemistry and Biology – Three textbooks with accompanying workbooks.
· Fabulous Physics – A comprehensive textbook and workbook which covers the foundational concepts of physics for further studies, for teenagers and adults alike.
· Cracking Chemistry – A comprehensive textbook and workbook which covers the foundational concepts of chemistry for further studies, for teenagers and adults alike.
· Brilliant Biology – A comprehensive textbook and workbook which covers the foundational concepts of biology for further studies, for teenagers and adults alike.
A total of 12 textbooks and 12 workbooks, which completely revolutionises learning physics, chemistry and biology.
Age ranges given are just an indication since homeschooled children will go at their own pace, and many children are way ahead intellectually and could easily progress on these books in primary school. It is important NOT to fix an age. Learning should be at the student’s pace, for full comprehension and success. There is no need to compare one student with another.
