What is a GEDCOM file?

GEDCOM is an acronym for "GEnealogical Data COMmunications." It is the data format used to create a universal genealogy file that allows you to exchange genealogical information between different genealogy software programmes, such as Legacy Family Tree builder, a programme you buy and download to your hard drive. A GEDCOM file can also be uploaded to online programmes such as Ancestry, MyHeritage and Findmypast.

A GEDCOM file formats your family tree data into a text file like that above, which can be easily read and converted by any genealogy software programme. As you can see it is not designed to be read by you as a text file.

However, all major genealogy software packages and websites allow you to both upload (import) and download (export) to the GEDCOM standard.

Step 1 The Irish Census

Using the 1901 Census as our source, we collate the details by townland for each household.

This is a sample census record for the Matthews family living at house 12 Main Street, Monasterevin, Co. Kildare on census night, March 31st 1901.

Step 2 Creating the GEDCOM file

After tidying up the data for accuracy and consistency, we code the data to convert it into a GEDCOM file.

This is the census record for Thomas Matthews, the Head of Household at 12 Main Street, Monasterevin coded within the GEDCOM file. There are almost 53000 lines of code in the GEDCOM file for the 1,974 residents of Monasterevin.

The GEDCOM files converts the Census data into a family hierarchy of parents, children and grandchildren, etc.

Step 3 Download then Upload

You will receive a link to download the GEDCOM file immediately your purchase is completed. Then you upload this GEDCOM file as a new tree to almost any Genealogy software programme, including online such as at Ancestry.com, findmypast.ie, MyHeritage.com.

Harness the OCR and AI software of the genealogy platforms straight away to discover original source documents such as births, marriages and death certificates, and start writing the social and personal stories of those who lived in 1901 at you location of interest.

With 60 billion records on Ancestry, 14 billion on findmypast and 20 billion on My Heritage, our GEDCOM files will turbo charge your research.

The Matthews Family in Ancestry.com

The Matthews family will look like this when first uploaded to Ancestry.com. Three generations of the Matthews family lived in the one house on Main Street, Monasterevin in 1901. Thomas and his two sons, William and John are all boot and shoemakers. When the GEDCOM file is uploaded to Ancestry.com, the family of grandparents/children/grandchild are all displayed correctly in a family tree hierarchy. That is what a GEDCOM file does.

The Green Leaf on the top right of each favicon indicates that Ancestry has found some possible record matches for the Matthews family. All told there are 29 "hints" to start with. It has even identified the potential parents Lucy Matthews, wife of John and mother of baby William. The Irish Census recorded her maiden name only but Ancestry has accurately identified her maiden name as "England" as she is the daughter of William England and Eliza Smyth. The hint is correct and Lucy's maiden name is in fact "England". Lucy was the daughter of William England and Elizabeth Smith and she was born in Midleton Co. Cork on June 24th 1878.

Ancestry has record hints for everyone in the family. There are 29 hints to be explored by clicking on the green leaf. As you add information to the Matthews family on Ancestry, more record hints will emerge, including connections to other family trees on Ancestry that include the Matthews family.

You can even contact the owners of those trees who may be descendants of the Matthews family and share stories, photographs and social and family history.
