Okunoshima, also famously known as Rabbit Island, is a tiny island just a ten-minute boat ride away off the coast of Takehara in Hiroshima Prefecture. It has a sordid history of being the site of a secret chemical weapons factory, but now celebrates its natural beauty with its coastal hiking trails and resort hotel. A day spent here is well worth the trip, wandering past the ruins of war while feeding adorable bunnies that come hopping in droves if they hear the rustling of paper cups full of pellets and carrots or bags of fresh cabbage. The waters around Okunoshima are aquamarine and pristine, and the sunsets are, of course, nothing short of stunning. I caught this one in watercolor, moved by the rich, almost metallic colors in the sky of bronze and copper. This postcard-sized 4x6 inch painting would make a fine focal point in any home.
