Feeling, Thinking, Speaking: Understanding the Internal Delay
Feeling, Thinking, Speaking: Understanding the Internal Delay — Educational Infographic (Printable, A2)
You will receive the printable unwatermarked version of this infographic
A research-grounded visual explaining why internal body signals, interoception, and motor planning differences can create a pause between feeling and being able to respond — a pause does not mean nothing is happening.
This infographic covers:
- Anatomical detail: prefrontal cortex (planning), motor planning, limbic system (emotion), insula (interoception) — with slowed signal, signal disruption, and faint or overwhelming signals along the pathway
- The cascade pathway: body state changes → interoception senses the signal → the brain links body sensation with emotion → alexithymia can make meaning and naming harder → motor planning must organise a response → speech/AAC/gesture output may be delayed, effortful, or inconsistent
- What's happening: alexithymia is not a lack of feeling — it's difficulty identifying, naming, or describing feelings; the person may know, feel, and want to respond, but the pathway from feeling to action can bottleneck
- What it can look like: long pauses before responding, going quiet even when understanding, emotions becoming visible before they can be explained, looking "fine" on the outside while overwhelmed inside
- Why it gets misread: delayed output can be mistaken for defiance or indifference; motor difficulty is often mistaken for lack of intent; the visible behaviour is only the last part of a much bigger internal process
- What actually helps: reduce sensory load and urgency, give extra processing and initiation time, accept all forms of communication (AAC, gesture, typing), support regulation first, presume competence
- Grounded in peer-reviewed research (Loureiro et al. 2024; Butera et al. 2023; Chenausky et al. 2019; Maffei et al. 2024)
