This self-guided walk explores mainly “the black metropolis” of Chicago as this neighborhood was once called.

It often follows its main artery with its galleries, 19th century mansions, monuments, murals or houses evocative of its musical and/or activist past.

To end on another note, it then takes you to the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology to see Brown Hall and the other architectural achievements of Mies van der Rohe, the last director of the Bauhaus school who took refuge in Chicago around 1938 to escape Nazi Germany.

There aren't many places to visit that are open on a regular basis, so it's mostly a walk of about 3 to 4 miles (depending of what you choose to do) in an area far from the beaten track.

It is also the possibility of memorable encounters with warmly welcoming locals.
