Back in 2014 I came up with a design for a lace crescent using some pretty green Aran weight yarn, and called it Phoebis, after a bright green moth. I had a number of people like it, but practically no one wanted to knit it. They all said they would knit it in a heartbeat, if only it were designed with fingering weight yarn. Fast forward to this summer. I’d been floundering a bit, unsure what to work on next. My eye kept catching a pretty hank of bright green fingering weight yarn on the other side of my desk. Hm. I did a little math, wound the yarn into a cake for knitting, and cast on… And so Moon Moth was born.

Knitting begins with a long cast on, and the lace edge of the shawl. The top four rows of the lace begin the shaping, which is continued with garter stitch short rows before binding off. I've included the math for five sizes.
  • Yarn: fingering weight; 325, 375 [450, 525, 600] yards.
  • Model: ColorPurl High Street in Pixie Dust in second smallest size. 400 yards in 100 grams. 80% SW BFL, 20% nylon.
  • Gauge: 18 sts and 33 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) in lace pattern, blocked.
  • Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) for gauge.
  • Finished size: 8.25 x 39, 8.75 x 45.25 [9.25 x 51.5, 9.75 x 57.75, 10.25 x 64].
  • Stitch instructions: Charted and written.
