Lady with an Ermine Illusion - PDF knitting pattern

This illusion is based on a portrait of Cecilia Gallerani, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in about 1490.  The painting is one of only four female portraits painted by Leonardo.

The illusion knit measures approximately 120 cm high by 93 cm wide (48" x 37") when knitted tightly using DK yarn and 3.25mm needles. It is designed to be viewed from the side so is ideal for a wall hanging but could also be used as the centre piece for a bedspread or as a throw.

The hanging in the photos used Stylecraft Special DK in Plum and Clematis (3 balls of each). You can use any weight of yarn but changing weight will change the overall size.

Illusion knitting is much easier than it looks. Photos never convey the WOW factor of the finished piece. When you look from directly in front you only see stripes. The image is revealed as you move around.

The pattern includes several versions of the chart including one for use on mobile devices.

See our free pattern for the Lady's head so you can try out the technique, or use it to make something small like a cushion.
