Cosmos
Lying on my back in the sun in a beautiful flower patch in a park near Hikone, Shiga Prefecture (Japan), there among the buzzing of insects I saw the sunlight lighting up these flowers and knew I had to turn this into a painting, someday. Half a year after taking that photograph the opportunity arose when I was sitting in my living room unable to walk, injured from a major car accident. Worried that I may never walk or work again, I decided to see if I still had any drawing skills left. My husband bought me some art supplies, among them a colorful box of oil pastel crayons. The cosmos being my husband’s favorite flower, I painted this for him as a thank-you, and the more I worked on it, the more I remembered I always wanted to be an artist. From then on, art became an important part of my recovery plan, and now I can walk fine. I see this painting and remember my own strength in the defiant blossoms of these cosmos flowers reaching up for the sun. May they fill your life and your home with inspiration and encouragement, too.
