Lesson 100:Bricks Without Straw & Moses' Prayer of Lament
Lesson 100 marks one of the most sobering turning points in the entire Exodus narrative. When Moses and
Aaron first stood before Pharaoh demanding freedom for Israel in the name of YAHWEH, Pharaoh's
response was instant, tyrannical escalation. Rather than softening his grip, Pharaoh accused the Israelites
of being 'idle' and issued a cruel decree: the taskmasters were ordered to immediately withhold straw from
the Hebrew brickmakers, yet force them to gather their own stubble throughout the land of Egypt while
keeping the daily quota of mud bricks completely unchanged.
The consequences were immediate and agonizing. The Hebrew foremen were beaten when the
unachievable tallies fell short, and the people turned against Moses and Aaron in bitter frustration. Moses,
carrying the crushed spirits of his people, went directly to the Lord in raw, transparent prayer: 'O Lord, why
have You done evil to this people? Why did You ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in
Your name, he has done evil to this people, and You have not delivered Your people at all.' (Exodus
5:22–23).
