The stitch pattern in these socks is inspired by the Carpino Sweater by Carol Feller. It’s my absolute favourite sweater, so why not have socks to match it?!  It is a good first-pair-of-lace socks as it is a very simple repeat.

Sizes

To fit foot circumference: 21.5 (22.5) cm / 8.5 (9) ins
Finished sock foot circumference: 19 (20) cm / 7.5 (8) ins

Recommended ease is negative to ensure the sock fits closely against your foot.  If you are inbetween sizes, go down a size rather than up.

100g of yarn will make up to a UK size 10 of these socks.  Adding a 20g mini-skein as a contrast colour will allow you to make a larger size.

Yarn
Any 425m per 100g skein of 75% Merino / 25% nylon sock yarn that is not too varigated will work well in this pattern.  It can also be knitted in other fingering weight sock yarns with 400m per 100g but do swatch to be sure.
Shown in Lay Family Yarns, Vintage China

Yarn Substitution
Many 4ply sock yarns can be substituted into this pattern. Due to the detail in the pattern a semi-solid or only lighted variegated yarn is recommend however or the detail will be lost. When substituting other yarns, swatching is recommended to ensure that the required sock size is achieved and to ensure sufficient yarn is purchased for the project.

Recommended Needles
2.5 mm in your preferred sock needle type: DPNs, short circular sock needles or long circular needle for the magic loop technique.

Notions
Scissors, 1 stitchmarker (more if you are using magic loop or a small circular - to mark your gusset and toes), darning needle for ends

Gauge
32 stitches and 48 rounds to 10cm / 4ins measured over Leg Pattern. Gauge is particularly important on the Heel and Toe elements of the sock. Loose knitters may need to change to a smaller needle and tight knitters may need to increase to a larger needle.

Construction and Techniques
The sock is knit in the round from the cuff down.  The heel is a flap and gusset construction with the gusset being on the bottom of the foot.  The toe is closed using matress stitch.
