“There is no compulsion in the religion. Guidance has been made clear from misguidance. Whoever disbelieves in taaghoot and believes in Allah has grabbed onto the strongest handhold which will never break. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” [2:256]
Allah has described His “deen” (religion) and His “rushd” (guidance) as two basic matters: disbelief in taaghoot, along with belief in Him. So He has required a form of kufr from His worshippers, that they must disbelieve in taaghoot. So what is this “taaghoot” which every Muslim must denounce, disavow, reject, and disbelieve in, in order for his Islam to be valid? Is it just another word for idols and false objects of worship? Or is the topic more detailed, requiring awareness of different manifestations and categories of taaghoot? That is the topic of this text, The Meaning of Taaghoot, by Shaykh al-Islam Muhammad ibn ‘Abdil-Wahhaab [d.1206] (may Allah have Mercy on him).
