This song grew out of a conversation I had with an army veteran who was spending his time working with people on the streets. He told me things that really stuck with me, and I couldn't stop thinking about the sheer isolation of that life.

I wanted to capture that feeling of being completely invisible. I came up with this image of a "barefoot shuffle"—the idea of someone forced to perform a desperate, repetitive dance just to scrape together enough change to survive another day. While everyone else is rushing past, preoccupied with their own lives, he’s just there, existing in the middle of all that indifference.

The "shuffle" in the song is really a symbol for being trapped. It’s that unending cycle of struggle where you're lacking the most basic things—not just a roof or shoes, but any kind of emotional support or hope. It’s a pretty bleak picture of despair, but I felt it was important to highlight the hardship that most people just choose to walk right past
