This elegant rectangular shawl pattern with a mesh appearance is inspired by the Art Deco design of the crown of the Chrysler Building in NYC. It is a charted lace design, with lace knitting on every other row.

Originally knit in fingering-weight Handmaiden Sea Silk, it was also test-knit as a shawl in Handmaiden Lace Silk and as a beaded scarf in Jaggerspun Zephyr.

The pattern starts in the middle with a provisional cast on resulting in a symmetrical shawl with a near-invisible join. You could also start with a garter border and knit from one end to the other. Alternatively you could knit from the ends in and graft together if you want to reverse the motif direction!

Apart from the usual types of lace increases and decreases, the pattern contains some “new” stitches, which are explained in depth. There is also an optional legend to use to knit the pattern without them.

The pattern has 5 pages of advice, pictures, layout, and instructions and 2 pages of charts.

ERRATA: The “special” single decrease stitches have the lifted stitch on the wrong side.

The “special” ssk should be worked as follows: slip 1 knitwise, lift the bar between the stitches on the needles and place it on the right needle, knit the two stitches on the right needle together.

The “special” k2tog should be worked as follows: lift the bar between the stitches on the needles and place it on the left needle, then k2tog.
