Find out what your PAYG instalment will be each quarter, what you'll owe or get back when you lodge, and whether varying your instalments is worth it, before the ATO's 85% line costs you interest.

For Australian sole traders and investors who pay PAYG instalments on business, rental, interest or dividend income.

What it tells you:

  • Your instalment each quarter under both the amount method (the ATO's amount) and the rate method (the ATO's rate × your instalment income), with the ATO due dates: 28 October, 28 February, 28 April and 28 July
  • Your projected tax for the year: 2025-26 or 2026-27 resident rates (including the cut to 15% from 1 July 2026), the low income tax offset and the 2% Medicare levy with the low-income reduction
  • Your expected refund or amount owing once your instalments, franking credits and any tax withheld from salary are credited
  • "Should I vary?": a plain answer (Could vary down / Don't vary down / On track), the ATO's own varied-amount formula for the quarter you choose, and the varied rate
  • A too-low check: test a varied amount and get a plain-English warning if it falls below 85% of your tax, the point where the ATO may charge general interest charge (GIC). It also gives the lowest quarterly amount that keeps you above the line
  • A cash set-aside plan: the share of every dollar to move into a tax account, what that comes to each quarter and month, and what should be left at 30 June
  • Whether you'd be automatically entered into PAYG instalments ($4,000 / $1,000 / $500 tests), and whether the annual instalment option could be open to you

What's inside: Home, Dashboard, Setup, Quarters, Instalments, Year-End Tax, Should I Vary, Set-Aside Plan, Checks, Rules & Rates, and Notes & Sources. A worked example is included, so you can see how it works before you type over it.

Every rate, threshold and date was checked against ato.gov.au (and the Medicare Levy Act for the low-income reduction) on 23 October 2026. Sources are listed in the file.

Built and checked by a CPA. Every formula tested against a separate calculation.

Not included: capital gains, the Medicare levy surcharge, family Medicare thresholds, the seniors and pensioners offset, and the two-instalment option for primary producers and special professionals. The 2026-27 Medicare low-income threshold has not been published yet, so the file uses the 2025-26 figure until you update it.
