Instead of No: Student Self-Advocacy Workbook for Work Refusal and Break Cards, High School
A student self advocacy workbook for teens who refuse work, with break cards, help cards, and a short reflection. No is a real word, but it does not tell anyone what you need. This workbook teaches students to say what is under the no, so adults can actually help.
Who it is for: resource rooms, counseling groups, advisory, 18 to 21 programs, job readiness and work based learning, and students with IEP self advocacy goals.
Why I made this: I have trained teachers in crisis prevention and deescalation for 15 years. Students who can name what they need refuse less, and the pages talk to them with respect, not down to them. When they use their words, adults have to honor it, or the words stop working.
What's included (one 16 page PDF):
• What's Under My No? a check in on the real reasons
• My Stuck Meter: 4 levels, so students catch it early
• Instead of No: 12 phrases that work better than no
• Say It Your Way practice scenarios
• The Break Deal: a break is a pause, not a way out
• I Need Help and This Is Too Hard lessons
• 8 role play cards and 16 break and help cards (classroom, job site, and PE)
• My Instead of No Plan, a reflection page, and a weekly tracker
• An adult page: what to do when a student uses their words
How I use it: I teach a few pages at a time in short sessions, practice with the role play cards, and give the student their own break and help cards. The adult page goes to every staff member who works with that student.
What you download: one printable PDF, 16 pages, US Letter.
Scope: this is a teaching tool and everyday calm support for refusal, not therapy and not emergency or restraint protocol training. It does not cover restraint or seclusion. Follow the student's IEP or behavior plan and your district's crisis procedures.
