Solo part for soloist study - not for performance!

This piece, in two contrasting parts, is based on the motto “Audivi Vocem Caelo” by Portuguese composer Duarte Lobo (c.1565–1624).

Written for Dutch saxophonist Henk van Twillert, it reflects his affinity for early Portuguese music. The saxophone takes on the role of a preacher, addressing the ensemble and sharing a message heard from heaven. The first part is a luminous yet restrained lament, shaped by a sense of uncertainty about that message.

The second part, more direct and incisive, presents a “sermon” in which the message is confronted and questioned by the ensemble. Here, material from the past reappears, now referencing J.S. Bach. Given Henk’s renowned interpretations of the cello suites, this connection felt especially personal.

The work is dedicated to Henk, my former teacher and a remarkable presence in the musical world.

This version for saxophone ensemble was written for Vento do Norte, a group I co-founded in 2005 and from which I learned immensely.
