Anmyeon Lotus — Original Korean Lotus Watercolor Painting 4”x6” Postcard
The sacred lotus, Nelumbo nucifera, is a culturally and spiritually important symbol throughout Asia. Its voluptuous shape, warming, spicy fragrance of carnation-meets-cinnamon, and its ability to bloom beautifully from the mud have inspired poets, artists, priests and philosophers for centuries. For me, it is a symbol of resilience, making the sacred lotus my favorite flower. I painted this flower after a very hot (33°C, 95% humidity) walk down the boardwalks of the Seongeon Second Hojeosuji Waterside Park in Anmyeon Town, Chungnam Province (South Korea). Watching the purple and blue dragonflies flit from bud to bud, hearing the frogs and reed warblers chirping, seeing black carp swish under the rubbery lotus leaves, despite the punishing heat, I felt a peace in my soul seeing these blossoms open so proudly, each one slightly different with its own character. The flower itself was a pleasure to paint but I also strived to catch that silky suede-like nap of the leaves, and Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints let me capture that texture. A most appropriate gift for that flower lover in your life.
