Know the minimum yearly repayment on every loan your company has made to a shareholder or associate, and whether a shortfall has turned into a deemed dividend.

Enter each loan once and record repayments as they happen. For every income year the workbook shows the opening balance, the Division 7A minimum yearly repayment, the interest at the ATO benchmark rate, repayments, the closing balance and any shortfall. It also checks whether each new loan meets the lodgment-day deadline, and it pulls together the figures for the company tax return.

What it works out:

  • Minimum yearly repayment for 7-year unsecured and 25-year secured loans, using the formula in section 109E. The remaining term in the first repayment year is the full term, as in the ATO's worked example.
  • Interest on daily balances at the benchmark rate. 2026-27: 8.77%. 2025-26: 8.37%. Rates back to 2013-14 are included, with sources.
  • Lodgment day (the earlier of the return's due date and the date it is actually lodged). Shows whether the written agreement was signed in time, and the deadline for any new loan that still needs one.
  • The year the loan is made: no repayment and no interest is required that year, whatever date the loan was made.
  • Repayments made before lodgment day reduce the first year's balance and also count towards that year's minimum (ATO method).
  • Shortfall = deemed unfranked dividend, with the distributable surplus limit shared out proportionately (section 109Y).
  • Non-complying loans: a deemed dividend in the year made, equal to the amount not repaid before lodgment day.
  • Tax return summary: item 6 label F (gross interest), item 8 label N (loans to shareholders and their associates) and item 8 label K (unfranked dividends paid), plus each borrower's deemed dividend and next year's minimum repayments.
  • Open years show what is still to pay by 30 June. Future years can be projected at the minimum.

Built and checked by a CPA. Every formula tested against a separate calculation. The workbook matches the ATO's published worked examples ($9,835 and $10,079 minimum repayments, $3,430 interest, the $8,000 non-complying loan and the $450 distributable surplus example). It was also compared with an independent Python model across 301 random loans, with 56,216 of 56,216 figures matching.

Not covered: substituted accounting periods, interest charged above the benchmark rate, refinancing a 25-year loan, Commissioner extensions, and Division 7A payments or forgiven debts other than loans.
