Aarnivalkea (Fin for Will-o'-the-wisp) is atmospheric ghost light seen by travelers at night, especially over bogs, swamps or marshes. It is a flickering flame that is said to jump, wobble or sway, or even move from place to place. It is often said that bursts of fire disappear or recede further as they approach.
In Finland, it was believed that there could be a treasure under the light, precious metals that were polished or cleaned with flame by the holder of the treasure. The treasure was guarded by an elf called Aarni (valkea means flame, fire or light). The flames were burning especially on Midsummer nights. Then they announced the location of the treasure.
