This book is a work of historical nonfiction that uses in-depth archaeological, documented, historical, cultural, oral, investigative interview, and other evidence to examine the historical timeline, origins, and migrations of the Akans of West Africa. This book traces the origins of the Akans to at least 12,000 years ago, to the great people of the Sahel and the Sahara who created the Sahelo-Saharan Civilization about 14,000-15,000 years ago. Not only does the book trace the origins of thee Akans to at least 12,000, but also to the people such as the ancient Saharan Libyan Garamantes, the Mande, the Nile Valley (ancient Egyptians and Nubians), ancient northern African Berbers, the Soninke of ancient Mauretania (ancient Ghana), as well as to other groups such as the Sumero-Babylonians, Aegeans (Cretans), the Hebrews, the Canaanites, the Carthaginians; and later to the aboriginal of what is now Ghana (the Guans). The book traces the Akan history to its early roots through major movements, settlements, and cultural transformations that present a structured timeline that helps readers understand how the Akan ethnic group evolved.

Using archaeological evidence, historical records, oral traditions, scholarly research, investigative interviews, cultural expressions, linguistic evidence, genetic evidence, as well as drawing on the broader West Africa historical context, the book explores the factors and relations that shaped the Akan ethnic identity, territorial expansion, and migration patterns. Moreover, the book also considers the relationships and experiences between the Akans and neighbouring peoples, as well as the political, social, and environmental influences that affected their movement and settlements. By organizing this material into a coherent timeline, the book seeks to simplify the complex history and make it accessible and meaningful to general readers and scholars alike.

The book’s main objective is to present a clear and balanced account of Akan history that connects origins with migration and cultural continuity over time. The Akan past is often portrayed as a series of disconnected events, and in many cases, erroneously made to start from Mali within the last 1000 years. However, the history of the Akans goes thousands of years back, and this book traces it to at least 12,000 years back, placing the history of the Akans in a larger regional framework and at a much earlier time period, showing how interrelationship, movement, adaptation, and identity formation have all contributed to the growth of Akan societies. By doing so, the book provides readers with a valuable resource for understanding one of West Africa’s (and the world at large) most influential groups.
